The wait after failing gets longer, not shorter
Splunk’s retake policy sets an escalating waiting period, counted from the day after your attempt: 7 days after your first attempt, 14 days after your second, 4 weeks after your third, and 8 weeks after your fourth, fifth or sixth. Retakes past the sixth attempt are handled case by case, and Splunk states plainly it can refuse one.
The practical read: a first fail costs you a week, which is forgiving. A second and third compound quickly — by your fourth attempt you are looking at two months before you can try again. Treat each attempt as expensive in time, not just the $130 fee, and do not book a retake date until you have a genuine reason to expect a different result.

Passing is final for that exam code until your three-year cycle brings recertification round.
Recertification: three years, and Splunk’s own pages disagree on the routes
Certifications run on a three-year cycle starting from the date your highest-level certification was achieved, and you must pass within the final year of that window, with a 90-day grace period if you miss the cycle end date. On how to actually recertify, Splunk’s general overview page and its dedicated Recertification Policy document do not fully agree: the overview mentions a further certification, continuing education, or a retake; the binding policy document names only two routes — a higher-level exam, or retaking the current one. Practice questions are for two things: building exam-day pace, and finding the gaps you do not know you have. They are not a substitute for the official blueprint or for hands-on time in a real Splunk instance.
