Most “which Splunk exam first” pages hedge, because for most vendor pairs the order is a judgement call. This one is not. Splunk states it directly: Power User is a required prerequisite for Enterprise Admin. The genuinely useful question is not which comes first — it is what changes between them, and the answer is not what the naming suggests.

The senior exam is not the more time-pressured one
It would be natural to assume the “advanced” exam in a track squeezes you harder on the clock. Here it is the reverse. Power User packs 65 questions into 60 minutes, about 55 seconds each. Admin gives you 56 questions in the same window — even after setting aside the 3 minutes Splunk’s own blueprint allocates to reviewing the exam agreement, that is roughly 61 seconds per question you actually answer. The prerequisite exam is the tighter clock.
Practically, that argues for treating Power User’s pacing as the harder habit to build, since you will need it regardless of the order Splunk has already fixed for you. Once you are through Power User, Admin’s extra seconds per question feel like room to breathe, not a new constraint.

Budget for both, not one
Because the sequence is mandatory, the honest cost comparison is not “which exam” but “the pair.” $260 minimum before any retake, at $130 each. If either attempt fails, the retake wait escalates the same way for both exams — 7 days, then 14, then 4 weeks, then 8 weeks — so a rushed plan that assumes back-to-back bookings is the most common way candidates blow their own timeline.
Take Power User now if…
- You have not sat either exam yet. There is no legitimate way to reach Admin without it — this is not a myth to weigh, it is Splunk’s stated requirement.
- You want the faster, tighter-clock exam out of the way first. Building 55-second pace early makes Admin’s slightly looser clock easier by comparison.
- You are new to Splunk searching and reporting. Power User’s scope — searching, reporting, knowledge objects — is the more natural starting point regardless of the prerequisite rule.
Move on to Admin once…
- Power User is certified. There is no way around this step.
- You actually administer a Splunk instance — indexers, forwarders, configuration files — rather than only searching one. Admin’s questions assume that hands-on context.
- You have budgeted the full $260 and, ideally, some buffer for a retake wait on either exam.
Where practice questions fit
Practice questions are for two things: building exam-day pace, and finding the gaps you do not know you have. They are not a substitute for the official blueprint or for hands-on time in a real Splunk instance.
A word of caution on where you get them. A large share of the results for this exam are “dump” sites claiming to host real exam content. Using those breaches Splunk’s exam agreement and puts your certification at risk. Questions written from the published blueprint are a different thing entirely — and they are the only kind worth your time.

Do I have to take Power User before Admin?
Yes. Splunk lists Splunk Core Certified Power User as a stated prerequisite for Enterprise Admin, not optional background reading. There is no path to Admin that skips it.
Which exam gives more time per question?
Admin does, narrowly. Even using the stricter reading that subtracts the 3 minutes the test blueprint sets aside for the exam agreement, Admin averages about 61 seconds a question against Power User’s roughly 55.
How much does it cost to hold both certifications?
$260 at minimum — $130 for Power User and $130 for Admin — before any retake. Each retake is full price again.
Can I retake either exam immediately after failing?
No. Splunk’s retake policy applies to both: 7 days after a first attempt, 14 after a second, 4 weeks after a third, and 8 weeks after a fourth, fifth or sixth.
Is Splunk Core Certified User required before Power User?
No. Splunk lists no prerequisite for Power User, so Core Certified User is not required before either exam in this pair.
