Is AWS Solutions Architect Associate Worth It in 2026? An Honest Look

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03 exam facts card: 65 questions, 130 minutes, passing score 720 on a 100 to 1000 scale, two minutes per question

Most “is it worth it” pages for this exam quote a salary figure and stop. AWS publishes no salary figure, so those numbers come from job boards, not from AWS. What AWS does publish is unusually complete: the price, the validity period, both renewal routes, and a discount voucher for people who already hold a certification. For once the full lifetime cost is knowable before you commit — which moves the real question somewhere else entirely.

This page uses only what AWS publishes on its own pages, and says where it publishes nothing. Every figure was verified on 18 September 2026.

What it costs, start to finish

Exam price150 USD per attempt
Retake feeFull price on every attempt — there is no limit on attempts
DiscountCertified individuals receive a 50% discount voucher in their AWS Certification Account
ValidityThree years
Renewal (3 more years)Pass the latest version of the exam, or in some cases a higher-level exam
Maintenance (1 more year)AWS Skill Builder activities. Requires an active certification within 90 days of expiry and an active Skill Builder subscription
Recommended experienceAt least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services
Salary upliftNot published by AWS

The price is not the obstacle — the year is

Set the numbers side by side and the entry cost looks modest against what the certification is asked to do for a career. That is precisely why the interesting constraint is the other published line: AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services.

Read that as a description of the person the exam is written for, because the questions are scenarios. They hand you a situation with competing pressures — resilience against cost, latency against complexity — and ask which design answers it best. That is a judgement you build by having made the trade-off before, not by memorising which service does what.

Can you settle a SAA-C03 question in two minutes?

Timed practice tests written from AWS’s published exam guide, with an explanation for every answer — so the questions you get wrong are the ones you learn from.

  • Full-length timed tests that hold you to the real 130-minute limit
  • An explanation for every answer, right and wrong
  • Original questions written from the published exam guide — never real exam content

Securing what you build? CompTIA Security+ practice tests. Shoring up the networking underneath? Network+ N10-009 practice exams.

So the honest worth-it calculation is not about the 150 USD. It is whether you have, or can get, hands on an AWS account and build something real before you sit. If you can, the certification is a fair signal and good value. If you cannot, you are buying a much harder exam than the price suggests.

Who it is genuinely worth it for

  • You already work with AWS and it is not on your CV. You are the candidate the exam is written for; the work is mapping what you do onto AWS’s vocabulary and the clock.
  • You are moving from on-premises infrastructure into cloud work. The breadth across security, resilience, performance and cost is a genuinely useful map of the territory.
  • Your employer or a partner status requires it. Then the question is when, not whether.

Who it is not worth it for

A worth-it page that cannot name anyone it is not worth for is a sales page. Three honest cases:

  • You have never touched an AWS console. Not because you are not allowed to sit it, but because scenario questions do not reward pure recall and you would be paying full price for each attempt.
  • You want a deep specialism you already know. If your work is entirely data, security or networking, a specialty path may fit better than a broad architecture exam.
  • You are targeting the Professional exam within weeks. Passing the Associate locks you out of retaking it for two years and consumes time you would spend on a harder exam — and the Professional exam is itself changing.

Where practice questions fit

Practice questions are a diagnostic, not a syllabus. Their job is to find the domain you are weak in and to train you to settle a scenario question without re-reading it four times. Used that way — timed, reviewed, and written from the published exam guide — they are the most efficient preparation available in the last few weeks.

A caution that matters more than it appears to. Sites offering “real exam questions”, brain dumps or leaked SAA-C03 content are selling you a violation of the AWS Certification Agreement, and AWS can revoke certifications over it. They are also usually stale. Original questions written from the published exam guide teach you to reason about trade-offs; memorised answers teach you to recognise a question you will not be asked.

Find your weak domain before the exam does.

The verdict

Worth it if you have the hands-on year, or a realistic route to it, and you want a broad credential that hiring managers recognise. The published numbers make the commitment unusually easy to plan around. For the exam parameters themselves, our AWS Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) exam guide sets out every published figure, including the one most pages miss: only 50 of the 65 questions are scored.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AWS Solutions Architect Associate cost in total?

AWS publishes 150 USD per attempt. The certification is valid three years, and certified individuals receive a 50% discount voucher in their AWS Certification Account. Renewal is by passing the latest version of the exam, or by Skill Builder activities that extend it by a year.

Do I need a year of AWS experience before taking SAA-C03?

AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. It is a recommendation, not a requirement, and nothing prevents you booking without it.

Does SAA-C03 increase your salary?

AWS publishes no salary figure, so any specific number comes from a job board or survey rather than the vendor. A better test is how many roles in your own market name it.

How long does the certification last?

Three years. You can renew by passing the latest version of the exam or a higher-level exam in some cases, or maintain it for one more year through AWS Skill Builder.

Is it worth it if I already work with AWS daily?

Often yes, because the exam is designed to certify exactly that experience and you are the candidate it is written for. The work is mapping what you already do onto AWS’s vocabulary and the 130-minute clock.
