Passing is the rule that constrains you
Read the two policies next to each other and the asymmetry is obvious. Fail, and you are inconvenienced: a fortnight’s wait, another 150 USD, and as many further attempts as you care to make, because AWS sets no limit. Pass, and a door closes for two years.
That matters more than it first appears, because a certification you hold is a certification you may later want to re-sit — to refresh it early, to lift a score, or simply because you have forgotten most of it by year three. On AWS you cannot, unless a new version has been released in the meantime. Renewal is a separate route: pass the latest version of the exam, or extend by a year through Skill Builder.

The practical takeaway is about sequencing rather than cramming. If you are weighing Associate against Professional, or thinking about timing a re-sit around a job application, decide before you book — because passing is the step you cannot undo for two years.
What AWS actually charges
AWS publishes 150 USD, which is refreshingly unusual; several certification bodies leave the price off the certification page entirely. The fee is payable in full on every attempt — there is no discounted retake — but certified individuals receive a 50% discount voucher in their AWS Certification Account, which is worth checking for before you buy anything. AWS does not state whether that voucher applies to every exam, so confirm it against your own account rather than assuming.
Results, and the wait
AWS posts final results to your AWS Certification Account within five business days after the close of the exam. Plan around that if you are certifying to a deadline: the pass is not immediate paperwork, and a re-sit after a failure cannot start for 14 calendar days on top.
Languages and one published end date
SAA-C03 is offered in ten languages. AWS publishes no retirement date for the exam itself, but it does publish one for a single language version: the Italian exam retires after 31 December 2026. If you were planning to sit in Italian, that is a real deadline; if not, it is a reminder that language availability and exam availability are tracked separately.
Where practice questions fit
Practice questions are a diagnostic, not a syllabus. Their job is to find the domain you are weak in and to train you to settle a scenario question without re-reading it four times. Used that way — timed, reviewed, and written from the published exam guide — they are the most efficient preparation available in the last few weeks.
A caution that matters more than it appears to. Sites offering “real exam questions”, brain dumps or leaked SAA-C03 content are selling you a violation of the AWS Certification Agreement, and AWS can revoke certifications over it. They are also usually stale. Original questions written from the published exam guide teach you to reason about trade-offs; memorised answers teach you to recognise a question you will not be asked.
